Introduction to the job
Hollow-core photonic crystal fibers are critical components for ASML’s advanced light sources, which power our metrology systems. Producing these fibers requires state-of-the-art glass manufacturing technologies, highly specialized cleanroom facilities, and a strong focus on quality control, safety and detail-oriented work. The technical challenges are diverse, ranging from controlling hydrodynamic effects during fiber drawing to machine conditioning, process stability, glass craftsmanship and advanced qualification. At the same time, the role offers a unique opportunity to contribute in a small, highly specialized team working at the interface of academic know-how and industrial high-tech manufacturing.
Role and responsibilities
As a Fiber Drawing Technician, you work in a cleanroom-based, high-tech fiber manufacturing facility where you take responsibility in the operational drawing and qualification of ASML’s specialized optical fibers. You participate across the full fiber drawing process: from raw material characterization and preform assembly to fiber drawing, qualification, documentation and preparation for shipment.
You identify opportunities to improve yield, quality and way of working, and you share these with senior engineers and management. You bring craftsmanship, attention to detail and a hands-on mindset to help realize fiber material that meets unique technical and quality requirements.
You work closely with a specialized team of fiber drawing experts, engineers and a technology partner in an international high-tech environment.
You report within the local team and interact with stakeholders in Erlangen and Veldhoven.
Key deliverables include providing sufficient high-quality fiber material on time, contributing to a safe and good working environment, and helping keep the facility, equipment and processes at a high standard.
Education and experience
You have a vocational education (German: Ausbildung), or a B.Sc. degree in Fine Optics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Glass Technology or a comparable technical field, combined with 1–3 years of relevant work experience.
Candidates with a higher degree or a different technical background are also encouraged to apply if they bring relevant hands-on skills, curiosity and motivation to learn.
Affinity with fine mechanical work, precision handling and craftsmanship with glass or delicate technical components is essential.
Skills
Hands-on experience with optical fibers, specialty fibers, hollow-core fibers, glass processing or comparable precision manufacturing is preferred.
Experience with qualification techniques such as SEM, optical microscopy, dimensional inspection or optical transmission testbeds is an advantage.
Experience with raw material inspection, quality control, or documentation in a technical environment is valuable.
After onboarding and training, you are able to work independently, follow agreed procedures and escalate deviations or risks in a timely and structured way.
Affinity with stock management, basic data analysis, statistical thinking and logistics is helpful to support reliable fiber delivery to different ASML locations.
Experience with maintenance, troubleshooting in a production or laboratory environment is advantageous.
Hand-on experience in technical problem solving to bring a delicate process back in control. You are comfortable working in cleanroom areas and high-tech facilities, and you understand the importance of discipline, safety and quality in such environments.
You have a strong motivation to secure reliable fiber output and contribute to continuous improvement of equipment, processes and ways of working.
You embrace ASML’s international and diverse working environment, communicate clearly, and stay focused on quality and continuous improvement. You are eager to learn, expand your technical skills and contribute to a small, remote team with a strong sense of ownership. Fluency in English is required; German language skills are a big plus. You are comfortable in a working a a small, remote team.
If you are motivated by hands-on precision work, high-tech manufacturing and continuous learning, we encourage you to apply.
Other information
You report to a team leader, delivery team lead or location manager. The primary work location is Erlangen, Germany. Occasional business trips to ASML headquarters in the Netherlands are required (especially at the beginning of your journey at ASML).
