Job Purpose:

We are looking for an experienced Analytical Chemist to join our team at Irish Distillers in Cork. Reporting to the Head of Analytical and Technical Development, the Analytical Chemist will work to ensure the quality of our products by providing ongoing technical support for finished bottle analysis. The successful candidate will also provide analytical support and troubleshooting to manufacturing processes, as well as to other groups within Central Labs and Production Teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform testing and analysis of finished bottle products and other spirits samples in a timely and efficient manner according to existing procedures and ISO standards.
- Perform calibrations and daily checks of the laboratory equipment.
- Maintain up-to-date, complete and precise records of all tests performed.
- Develop and update in-house laboratory procedures as appropriate.
- Support senior analytical chemists and scientists during analytical method development and validation.
- Support any on-going research projects and Pilot Plant activity.
- Perform troubleshooting and basic maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Create and update laboratory documentation and procedures.
- Perform second person check/review of other colleague’s laboratory data and notebooks.
- Log-in samples and enter results into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
- Record non-conformances and perform investigations.
- Maintain chemical and chemical reagents inventory up to date and ensure appropriate waste disposal
- Work according to the Central Lab Quality Management System and ensure compliance to the ISO 9001 quality standards.
- Actively participate in Internal audits and safety lab walkthrough.
- Ensure a high level of laboratory housekeeping.
- Identify and make recommendations for improvements as part of a team within or outside the department in order to ensure continuous improvement.
- Communicate results effectively with the team and other teams across Central Laboratory.
- Support all other on-going laboratory functions and requirements.
- Ensure Midleton site and Central lab Health and Safety requirements are implemented in lab area and followed.
Skills & Knowledge:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry or related field
- At least 3-5 years of experience in analytical chemistry, preferably in a manufacturing or laboratory environment
- Good understanding of the principles of ISO quality systems.
- Good analytical knowledge and experience about GC, HPLC and ICP techniques.
- Weighing, Pipetting, Solution / standard preparation.
- Be able to work on his/her own, as well as with the team.
- Well organised, accurate and have strong documentation skills.
- Good numeric and IT skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Desirable Skills
- Practical understanding of both the fundamentals and practical implementation of analytical science with a bias towards Gas and Liquid Chromatography.
- Good investigative capability and a good ability to document and communicate results.
