The Role:
At HRUK we leverage data science and actuarial expertise to support pricing, risk management and strategic decision-making.
This is a 3 year FTC and the role holder will develop and embed data science tools and techniques to quantify mortality and morbidity risk, directly supporting pricing and assumption setting. This involves building data analytics infrastructure (i.e. R packages, databases and Apps), using version control and DevOps practices (e.g. Git-based workflows), and applying data science techniques to internal and client datasets to generate robust, well-documented, decision-ready insights.
The role will be highly collaborative, working closely with the Data Science Lead, biometric research actuaries, UK business development and the global Hannover Re data science community. There is scope to be involved in various internal expert networks and attend internal and external conferences.
The ideal role holder will be creative, intellectually curious, versatile, show initiative and be able to translate complex analysis into clear business insights. The role is designed to develop a broad combination of technical, commercial and stakeholder management skills. Through exposure to a variety of projects and collaboration across the company, the successful candidate will build a versatile skill set that can support a range of future career directions.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Development and maintenance of HRUK analytics infrastructure (databases, R packages and Apps).
- Research and analyse insurance and health data and conduct analysis of client data and the in-force portfolio to explore trends and patterns.
- Contribute to the development of analytical techniques and models to enhance HRUK’s understanding of biometric and behavioural insurance risks and support the development of the Central Bases and assumptions.
- Manage own work priorities, work in a highly organised way. Managing colleagues’ expectations.
- Apply and develop data science techniques within HRUK including those that create efficiency improvements and provide data insights.
- Collaborate with and support Business Development by
- Undertaking analysis of client data to support pricing activity.
- Creating material for marketing and client presentations on research topics.
- Develop relationships and collaborate with internal and external partners (industry, academic, actuarial, medical and other organisations) to improve HRUK’s understanding of Data Science and Biometric Risk.
- Risks and Controls
- Ensure documentation of own work and output is accurate, up-to-date and accessible.
- Identify and enhance the quality and value of processes for the department.
- Adhere to all Local and Group Guidelines.
- Contribute to strategic, research and business initiatives across the Branch, applying analytical skills to a wide variety of commercial and operational challenges.
About You:
Qualifications Required:
- Minimum of an Upper Second Class (2:1) degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, computer science, or related field.
- PhD in a relevant field such as computer science, epidemiology or statistics.
Experience:
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a data analytics role or PhD.
- (Re)insurance experience desirable.
- Healthcare and medical data experience desirable.
Skills:
- Knowledge of at least one scripting language (R or Python). Basic knowledge of SQL.
- Knowledge of data science and statistical techniques including GLM and tree-based models.
- Experience with cloud services, DevOps and Git version control desirable.
- Experience building Apps is desirable.
