Role Description

• The Group Audit (GA) function comprises approximately 850 team members who take a proactive, risk-based and independent approach to assist the Bank’s business and infrastructure functions in identifying key control weaknesses. As the Bank’s “Third Line of Defence”, GA acts as an independent and forward-looking challenger and adviser to Senior Management and is strongly relied upon by Regulators.

• The Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa (APAC & MEA) Fungible Audit Team provides flexible audit capacity across priority regional, country and portfolio demand. The team supports high-quality audits, finding validations, thematic reviews and other approved assignments in accordance with Group Audit methodology, helping the region respond effectively to changing risks, priorities and demand.

• The Lead Principal Auditor will lead complex audits and workstreams across different businesses, functions and jurisdictions. The role will evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls relating to the underlying risks, provide day-to-day direction to assigned audit teams and support the development of India-based audit capability.

• The role will work collaboratively with the Principal Audit Manager, relevant Chief Auditors, Principal Audit Managers, Country Heads, subject-matter experts and colleagues across Group Audit to provide “front-to-back” and “joined-up” assurance. Assignments will be determined according to the approved team capacity plan, business and regulatory priorities, individual skills and development requirements.

• The Lead Principal Auditor will also act as a coach and role model for other auditors, support effective knowledge transfer across the team and contribute to a high-performing, inclusive and flexible team culture.

Your key responsibilities

• Lead complex audits and workstreams across agreed APAC & MEA regional, country and portfolio priorities, evaluating the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls relating to the underlying risks.

• Execute and lead day-to-day audit work, including audit planning, risk assessments, business monitoring, fieldwork, reporting and finding validation activities.

• Plan and execute audit fieldwork in accordance with the agreed audit approach, including documenting activity flows, identifying key risks, assessing control design and testing whether controls are operating effectively.

• Determine the appropriate audit approach for assigned workstreams and provide clear direction, coaching and support to other team members participating in the assignment.

• Lead the preparation of audit reports for review by audit management, including developing and agreeing high-quality findings that clearly articulate the identified control weaknesses, associated risks and required remediation.

• Complete assigned audit work in accordance with Group Audit methodology, quality requirements, agreed budgets and delivery timelines.

• Review audit workpapers and other deliverables prepared by assigned team members, providing constructive feedback and helping to maintain consistent quality standards.

• Review and provide an independent and balanced assessment of remediation action plans proposed by stakeholders, helping to support robust and sustainable remediation.

• Act as an effective challenger to finding owners during the remediation and finding-closure process.

• Lead or support finding validations, assessing whether remediation is complete, sustainable and supported by sufficient evidence.

• Support thematic reviews, business monitoring, risk assessments, ad hoc projects and special investigations where assigned.

• Work collaboratively with relevant Chief Auditors, Principal Audit Managers, Country Heads, subject-matter experts and other Group Audit teams to deliver an integrated and “joined-up” audit approach.

• Adapt effectively to assignments across different businesses, functions and jurisdictions while applying relevant technical expertise and developing knowledge of new audit areas.

• Communicate openly with audit management and internal stakeholders, keeping them informed of emerging risks, potential issues, delivery dependencies and any anticipated delays.

• Present complex and sensitive matters clearly, comprehensively and professionally, translating complex topics into concise and understandable messages.

• Proactively develop and maintain professional and consultative working relationships with stakeholders and colleagues across Group Audit.

• Keep abreast of relevant industry, regulatory, business and audit developments and share relevant knowledge across the team.

• Support the Principal Audit Manager with capacity planning, assignment mobilisation, skills assessment and regular reporting on delivery status, quality and emerging resource requirements.

• Coach and develop auditors through structured feedback, knowledge transfer, varied assignments and support for relevant professional qualifications.

• Reinforce an environment where people management, inclusion, continuous learning and development are key priorities.

• Act as a role model for new and existing team members, supporting effective integration, collaboration and high performance.

Your skills and experience

• Significant experience in internal audit, external audit, risk management, controls or another relevant financial-services role, including experience leading complex audits or major audit workstreams.

• Strong knowledge of internal auditing standards, risk and control concepts and the three lines of defence model.

• Audit or business knowledge and an understanding of risks and regulatory requirements in one or more relevant areas, such as Corporate Bank, Investment Bank, banking operations, technology, risk, compliance, finance or other infrastructure functions.

• Demonstrated ability to lead audit teams or workstreams, provide effective coaching and deliver high-quality work through others.

• Strong understanding of the control environment and regulatory expectations within a global financial-services organisation.

• Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to evaluate complex information, identify root causes and reach balanced, evidence-based conclusions.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex and sensitive matters clearly and professionally.

• Strong stakeholder-management, influencing, problem-solving, planning and presentation skills.

• Ability to work effectively across different businesses, functions and jurisdictions and to develop knowledge rapidly when assigned to new audit areas.

• Ability to work in virtual and global teams within a matrix organisation, transfer knowledge and develop the capability of team members.

• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environment.

• Experience of working across APAC and familiarity with the Middle East and Africa would be advantageous.

• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required. Relevant professional qualifications, such as CA, CPA, CIA, CISA or equivalent, are preferred.

• Proven ability to leverage AI tools to enhance productivity, optimise workflows to solve business problems, while applying critical judgment to ensure responsible and ethical use of data and AI outputs.
